Zimmer Dental is pleased to announce the launch of the Puros® Pericardium Allograft Membrane in the Americas

The Natural Choice for Ridge Augmentation

Delivering high quality and exceptional performance characteristics, Puros Pericardium is the natural membrane of choice. Puros Pericardium provides a long-lasting barrier when optimum strength and handling for graft containment are necessary. It is an outstanding choice in cases such as Puros Block Allograft coverage and large ridge augmentation procedures, where adaptability to surface contours is essential.

  • A proprietary, natural biological dressing designed for successful Guided Tissue Regeneration and Guided Bone Regeneration procedures
  • Provides an excellent healing environment and acts as a guide for the regeneration of vital tissue1
  • Retains the natural collagen matrix and mechanical properties of native pericardium due to the proprietary Tutoplast® Process2
  • Exceptional handling, quick hydration, five-year shelf life and room temperature storage

A Variety of Clinical Advantages

Puros Pericardium is a high-quality regenerative material, exhibiting multidirectional strength and exceptional adaptability to surface contours.

  • Long history of effective clinical results in general surgery applications3
  • Cell-occlusive – prevents epithelial cell migration and maintains space for periodontal ligament and bone regeneration4
  • Wound stabilization – collagen helps stabilize and maintain blood clot in the defect space5
  • Puros Pericardium has a resorption profile of 4 to 6 months. The timeframe for remodeling depends upon the site; patient age, health and metabolic and nutritional status; biomechanical load on the graft
  • Pericardium acts as a scaffold for the ingrowth of the patient’s own vascularized connective tissue. It is absorbed over time through a process called remodeling.
  • Rehydrates quickly; easy to manipulate and handle
  • Functions as a barrier during the critical period of wound healing
  • Biocompatible; easily assimilated into the body's normal tissue healing process
  • Three convenient sizes can be cut to shape for specific procedures
  • Contours to ridge; highly cohesive and adaptable

The Unique Tutoplast Process

The Puros Allograft family of products is refined using the proprietary, 5-stage Tutoplast sterilization process. While preserving the valuable collagen matrix and tissue integrity, this process gently removes unwanted materials such as cells, antigens and viruses, as well as inactivating pathogens. Tutoplast-Processed tissues have been used for over 30 years in more than one million procedures without a single reported case of disease transmission.

1. Osmotic treatment – Kills bacteria, destroys and removes unwanted cells, further reduces viral load

2. Oxidative treatment – Destroys remaining proteins and minimized potential graft rejection

3. Alkaline treatment – Further reduces prion infectivity

4. Solvent dehydration – Removes water from tissue and acts as a disinfectant, further reducing prions

5. Limited-dose gamma irradiation – Provides a sterility level of 10-6 and preserves graft integrity

Is the Tutoplast process different for soft tissue and hard tissue?

There is one slight difference between the hard and soft tissue processing. Hard tissue processing utilizes a delipidization step to inactivate lipid-enveloped viruses (such as HIV and HCV) and to remove fat, enhancing the healing characteristics. Soft tissue (pericardium) processing mechanically removes fat and includes an alkaline treatment of 1N sodium hydroxide (NaOH), at room temperature, for one hour. This processing step is scientifically recognized as an acceptable and effective methodology for reducing prion infectivity. Tutoplast processing has been shown to reduce the viral load of tissues by 12 logs, which is 10,000 times higher than any viral load ever recorded in a human patient.

The Tutoplast® Process has been fully validated for preservation of tissue biomechanical properties, viral inactivation, prion inactivation, healing and elimination of antigenicity.
